Wandering brain

I find it so hard to be where I am. My body is nowhere near my thoughts.

I have been alone for 4 days, today I happened to speak to myself in Spanish and that felt grounding. I wonder if I wander because the rest of who I am is foreign. I am foreigner in this land, but this is home. My roots however, are back “home” and my thoughts ponder upon them often. And then theirs my offsprings and theirs, and my thoughts jump to them too.

So I am never just here. I wish I could be by myself and abide where I reside. Sigh. It is beautiful and peaceful when I get a good glimpse of here.

Steps into Retirement:

Today I went back in time. Reminiscing my teenage years. I slept in. Really 9:30 is pretty late. Not only that but I stayed in bed!

Then listened to the Bible while snuggling under covers some more. That restoring activity was followed by a call to my best friend, the one who loves me with great enthusiasm, my wonderful 2 year-old grandson. He chatted and cooked on his play stove and reenacted the fire alarm going off a couple weeks ago…

Then I decided I was hungry enough for a late breakfast but instead I curled on the floor and perused magazines for inspiration as I made plans with friends- this time friends my age.

Now it’s time for lunch and back to adulthood.

Brain dump- random thoughts

a blue jay took a bite at the feeder today

Betty attacked me today-crazy hen!

Today was a lovely rainy day off and I slept more than I did chores. Starlings, nuthatches and finches sing of spring but it is cold-raw.

Crocuses are blooming.

Life is a mix of joy and sadness lining the sides of the road as we go.

I recently realized that in 12 years I will be 70! But I don’t feel a day over 25.

Just got a new scooter to feel the breeze as I ride. I will keep on riding scooters, skates, boards, kayaks and bikes…

and all these random little things that make up my day happen in and through His presence.

Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy to God our savior , who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, dominion and power both now and forever. Amen“-Jude 24

Birds or Abstract Swirls

I recently bought a beautiful long, flowy skirt with a bold pattern. I showed it to one of my daughters through a video call. I was showing her the bold pattern when she asked, “Are those birds?” To which I quickly responded with “No, they are abstract patterns like a kaleidoscope.” She insisted that they were birds and asked me to take a picture of it so she could show me the birds. As I framed the skirt in my phone camera- I saw them! The birds popped out of the pattern like and optical trick they were there all along.

The same “optical trick” came into clear view for me today as I was listening to a study of the book of Daniel and how to thrive in Babylon. We all know the story, Daniel got thrown into the lions den. We have also heard about his friends who got tossed into the fiery furnace. As I listened to the speaker, both these stories came into clear view today. Daniel lived in exile from Jerusalem, he was a “prisoner” in Babylon. But Daniel LIVED as a free man for God. He trusted God and obeyed God and was not eaten by the culture. He survived and thrived his time in the den.

The same happened with his friends. They were bound and thrown into the fiery furnace, the literal one and the metaphorical one. And when the furious king looked into the furnace- he saw not 3, but 4 men.

I often forget that – I am in the furnace. Living in Babylon as an alien, as a soldier. Not alone. Hebrews 5:13

So many times I miss the birds for the squiggles.

Daniel 6:4 …”they could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.”

It was all in my head

Today I woke up, light headed. By light headed I mean my head, my brain, felt light. I didn’t have to blink twice to make sure I was awake and that the heavy feelings which had been plaguing my brain where provoked by just random, mostly untrue thoughts.

Each morning, for weeks now, I have woken up with a hangover of feelings and thoughts that I cannot shake. Like walking in a fog. It has felt like a heaviness in my soul, and my body has been aching more than usual. I have felt like the inspiration for A.A. Milne’s character, Eeyore.

Haven’t had energy, enthusiasm… Living has been exhausting because I have had to expend a lot of energy to discern thoughts, a lot of energy to overcome pain, feelings of anxiety- my body has been in a constant state of stress. My jaw ached, my teeth clenched, it almost felt like my muscles buzzed with the tension of anxiety. Anxious over what, you might wonder? I wonder, too. Over nothing in particular, but everything in general. If you ask me what I am worried about, I would tell you that I am not worried, but my body and brain say differently.

I have also been asking God, “What gives?” I don’t know why I have been feeling joyless, numb, hopeless. And although I have felt so desolate, God has listened to my frustrations and keeps talking to me through friends, through podcasts, through my counselor and my physician, through the Bible…. Little messages of hope and reassurance that despite the feelings caused by perseverating thoughts, he is faithful and true and my circumstances are not unknown to him.

I finally went to my doctor to talk about the fog I have been living in and she didn’t really want to prescribe an antidepressant. She advised me to take a couple weeks to decide if I really wanted to go that route. I told her, through tears, that I was ready to give it a go. I needed something to get me leveled. And so she did. And last night I took my first pill, and today was a much better day.

No negative thoughts, no perseverating thoughts. I could see things clearly for what and how they really are. My day was not devoid of obstacles, problems, troubles, but they didn’t overwhelm me.

So like I said, it was all in my head and I am so glad to have gotten a medication that helps my brain function better.

I share this not to have anyone judge me or feel sorry for me, but because so many are feeling so fragile these days, anxious, on the edge where there is no more margin to deal with the day to day life. Getting help, reaching out to others is essential, necessary, good. Especially reaching out to God, trusting in Him, and accepting that sometimes our brokenness is not only spiritual, but also in our heads and help can be as practical as prayer and a pill.

1But now, this is what the Lord says—
he who created you, Jacob,
he who formed. you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
3 For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;

-Isaiah 43

Longing To

Here and now

A sliver of moon peaks thru the unfurling maple leaves

The geese have finally said all there good nights

And the concert of tree frogs and peepers fills the twilight.

A dog on my lap as we both sway back and forth in a hammock

Listening to the longing sounds of trucks speeding down 22A

Going places, away.

Try as I may, my soul can’t remain anchored.

It follows the trucks to memories of traveled adventures.

Wanderlust of the heart to go and hug, in my arms, the girl it misses out west.

And be swallowed up by her curly tresses.

A Slice of Summer

Languishing waters

Dressed in velvet green.

Home to jumping fish

Sitting turtles caught gossiping on a stick.

Floating leaves giving previews of the Fall parade.

Laughing and scolding of kingfishers enjoying an evening buffet.

Minnows blowing kisses at the synchronized water bugs

Skidding, skimming in mass and parting as my kayak flows.

Your grassy banks hemming in the joy and peace where squirrels and herons and my soul get their fill.
